'ALWAYS START WITH WHY'

What is English?

How does this look at Mayfield?

We have set out in these website pages how we prepare, plan and deliver a clear, consistent and challenging English curriculum for our children to meet their needs. You can download copies of every central document at the base of the relevant pages in PDF format. The subject guide and policy itself can be found at the base of this page.

This is the VISION and OVERVIEW page. Please also take a look at our separate READING, WRITING, LET'S TALK & PHONICS pages.

Our Over-Arching Vision For English

The overarching aim for English in the national curriculum is to promote high standards of language and literacy by equipping pupils with a strong command of the spoken and written word, and to develop their desire to read wider and more often. Our curriculum is designed to ensure children  become increasingly fluent communicators, keen and interested readers and confident writers. Our children are geared for this by an English curriculum that teaches our children to speak, present and write fluently so that they can communicate their ideas and emotions to others and, through their reading and listening, others can communicate with them.

Teaching children to read and write independently is one of the core purposes of any primary school. These key skills not only unlock the rest of the curriculum but also have a huge impact on children’s self-confidence and future life chances.

An English Vocabulary

Gathering new terminology runs across the curriculum and is outlined across the various curriculum pages. Most specifically in English sessions, we look to use 'topic' specific language gained through the stimulus for our speaking, listening, reading and writing work. This may come through texts we share or themes we study. We also aim to constantly build and revisit grammar and punctuation terminology during each writing project. Finally, we gather and store language via our Reading & Writing Stations and through our Knowledge Organisers.

Our latest work as English & Phonics Leaders...

1) We have been focusing hard upon the implementation of the revisions to our reading comprehension and engagement namely through Reading Gang Comprehension and Race Across The World.

2) We have been working with colleagues across school to study and then model small revisions to our writing project model as we constantly search for refinements and improvements at impact upon the learner's journey. Mr Denton has been supporting our work with this with practical classroom support for colleagues.

3) Our Let's Talk focus has seen us implementing several new strategies and ideas into the earlier stages of projects and through the adaptations made to our outcomes via Let's Show.

4) Phonics and Early Reading continues to receive monitoring and review of its consistent delivery under Mrs Miller's leadership.

* We follow Pearson's Reading Scheme throughout school - all relevant levels of book are fully decodable. We follow Red Rose Phonics as our phonics scheme and No Nonsense Spelling (Year 2).
