MAYFIELD SPORTS MINI LEAGUES

  Another unique wider curriculum innovation for our children!

Five sports now hold the heart of our competitive and experience based sporting offer. We determined that our children at starting point needed to experience competitive sport but in the confines of an intra-school system on a much more frequent basis and within a suitably impressive arena. So we targeted some of our Sports Premium funding over many years to create this sporting legacy. From early beginnings involving just football in-between the Covid restriction disrupted periods, we are now establishing our 5th sport and engaging over half of the school population. With over 30% of those children new to active sport and over 60% of children new to the chosen sport.

Interestingly, over 90% of the learners in Year 6 who take part in mini leagues who were not on track to achieve reading, writing or maths combined expected standards at the end of Year 4, go on to achieve that combined standard two years later. There are many contributory factors to this but we believe 'feel good learners' transfer these attitudes to other areas and we value the resonating link between this social and sporting opportunity and how it feeds into academic positivity. It is adding real capital.

The mini leagues are built around the idea of four teams created by the children of Year 6: Chelton; Southpool; Tackenham; United.

Take a look below at a personally created and adapted provision that we are really proud of. It was created to meet the needs of our children and continues to be a key method both socially and academically in turning learners into 'feel good learners'.

Each of our mini leagues are run on a voluntary basis by our dedicated staff in areas of interest.

FOOTBALL MINI LEAGUE

Full mini league for Years 5&6, academy mini league for Years 3&4, Mayfield Lionnesses (commencing Summer 2026).

Our unique St Patrick's Road Stadium is the home for this.

NETBALL MINI LEAGUE

Netball runs through the year for Year 5&6 and also a younger version with more skills based focus in Years 3&4.

The Netball Arena is the home for this.

CRICKET SUPER 8s

Training runs during appropriate seasonal conditions culminating in Super 8s events during the Summer Term.

Our Mayfield CC Ground is the home for this. 

TRACK & FIELD MINI LEAGUE

Commencing in Summer 2026, this league will see our children represent their teams and earn individual awards for their personal best achievements.

Our track and field arena at the far side of our grounds is the home for this.

GOLF MINI LEAGUE

Golf Foundation has been in place for two years now and we will be adding the mini league in Summer 2026. Focusing upon chipping and putting, this competition will see our children represent their teams earning points per hole in specially devised competitions. This mini league is devised for our younger children in school.

The Golf Foundation supported by the R&A are the suppliers of the initial resources, training and activities that we use throughout.

We will be using our putting greens, chipping area next to the Year 1 outdoor space and our Crazy Golf holes.

 

Personalised event pennants, medals and trophies are used throughout the various events.
