Year 5 begins to think about the final stage of the Mayfield journey. We want to bring more memorable, recurring learning opportunities alongside the deepening of knowledge in many areas and ensuring we time for lots of fun and smiles. In our upgraded 'I Dream of Being' curriculum, we have added some new projects and have sharpened and enhanced our strongest ones all alongside our further developments to our unique classroom environments.
Themes studied in other subject areas act as a central stimulus for our English units this year. Seeing us range from Greek Mythical Adventures to Ancient Greece Information Texts to Kingdom of Benin Diaries and Grand Victorian Attraction Posters. Like all year groups, we combine our English work between writing focused units (with 'Writer's Craft' grammatical skills embedded within these) alongside a clear writer's process. This runs alongside a parallel focus upon reading via our range of classroom sessions each day, and across the week, using our class texts and our Reading Gang comprehension characters. We have really focused upon adding some spark and challenge to our reading work across school with some new initiatives and new methods. Underpinning each of these are our constant speaking and listening activities embedded within our writing and reading activities but forming a constant thread across the curriculum via our 'Let's Talk' initiative across the curriculum.
Mathematics continues the thread of starting with number and place value projects and moving into shape, space, measurement and handling data. There is a still a great emphasis upon embedding those core mental mathematics skills which we feel underpin so many of the concepts we cover and getting those written methods applied in many different word and real life problems as possible.
Our Science work this year focuses upon the following projects: Reversible & Irreversible Changes; A Deeper Study of Life Cycles; Changes with Age; Earth & Space; Forces (Part 2). Under the banner of The STEM Agency our big question enquiry team delve deep into these subject areas.
Our History studies focus upon Ancient Greece in Gods & Legends, The Kingdom of Benin and its overlaps with the rise of the British Empire in Victorians-On-Sea. The Victorian project has traditionally been one of our favourites as we can draw upon our local area for this and meet the challenges of our historic town developer John Bickerstaffe in 'Project 1890'.
Frozen Kingdoms, The Amazon and The Growth of Blackpool are our Geography studies during the year. Looking at the power of the natural world, a deeper study of a major contrasting region and climate and then moving our eyes back to local geography provides a strong blend to carry our substantive concepts of trade, climate and location amongst others. Our Religious Education studies have continued to be diverse and created lots of discussion in themes relating to sacred texts, Jesus as a teacher, the meaning of 'peace', women and their messages in the Old Testament and further angles on the Christmas and Easter festivals.
Greek sculpture, Rainforest collage and watercolour seascapes are the focus of Art & Design in Year 5. Studying the work of Euthymides, Henri Rousseau and Matthew Palmer amongst others. Design & Technology visits Food & Diet, Moveable Mechanics and Textiles once more in 'Feast For The Gods', 'Pagne - Clothing of Benin' and 'The Big Wheel'. Music follows our format of Singing, Performing and Composing with a constant Listening and Appraising focus with a careful choice of songs to perform and listen to using the Model Music Curriculum: Appendices all taking place in our dedicated music space: The ABC Theatre. Our lead sports: Netball, Football and Cricket continue to lead projects in Physical Education work alongside our summer Track and Field work and our Swimming curriculum.
In French,we study and learn new vocabulary related to the themes of ’A L'Ecole', 'Au Cafe', 'As-Tu Un Animal?', 'Les Habitats', 'Le Weekend' & 'En Ville'. Taking journeys into new language related to schools, pets and French towns. Our Year 5 Computing work continues to develop skills and knowledge through three specific projects: 'Adapting Codes' (Programming), 'Transmit & Transfer Data' (Data & Information) & 'Stop Motion' (Creating Media). Our Computer Systems & Networks focus and our E-Safety work continues each term across the year with specific units and studies. My Happy Mind/PSHE & Relationships focuses upon, amongst many aspects, knowledge of how our brain works, how relationships work (or don't),digital safety via social media and engaging in good habits and routines.
