YEAR TWO: SUMMER TERM
SUMMER BRINGS MORE SUNSHINE TO YEAR 2
OUR CORE INTENTION IN ACTION
Take a look at the page below, including our curriculum project posters and mats, and download copies at the base of the page.
Our English projects have again covered a range of styles and writing purposes. Starting with diary entries from The Wright Brothers, moving to writing to entertain inspired by All I Said Was by Michael Morpurgo and then creating instructions for how to fly a plane in our history inspired project. Working on problem solving with addition, subtraction, multplication and division is the focus of Mathematics during the term with further work on measurements and position/direction.
We have looked at the work of Clarice Cliff during our sculpture studies during Art & Design. We then attempted our own clay pots using what we have observed and learned earlier in our project. Summer means composing in Music: we used the theme 'first flight' to develop some appropriate sounds using our percussion instruments. The children return to food and diet during their Design & Technology project. Inspired by the feats of the Wright Brothers, the children will make their own Orville's biscuits without milk. In Physical Education, we focus upon the children's motor competence skills in the context of running, jumping and throwing skills linked to athletics. We then move into the sport, specific unit of football with a focus upon the notion of attack and defend and then shooting at a target.
Our History studies involve the children returning to their theme from Year 1, this time looking at the early days of aviation. It is called Travels & Tales 2: First Flight and looks at the life and times of Amy Johnson (and her local connection to Squires Gate Airport) and of course the Wright Brothers. During our Geography work, we look at My Country - New Country. We ask: Is Australia just like our home? We make comparisons as well as introducing a new region to our thinking and building upon what we already know and understand. We take a close look at holy buildings and their importance during Religious Education. We then move on to talk about Ascension and Pentecost and what they mean to people of faith.
We compare the suitability of materials for their jobs during our Science work this term. Considering the ways in which we use everyday materials and why they are selected for their jobs because of their properties.
We will build upon the first programming from Year 1, when we look at how we can loop instructions that we use during our Computing work this term. Word processing the major focus of our computer systems work. The children's E-Safety work focuses upon issues related to personal information and how this is really important. We also look at if we should share personal information and what the problems could be around this. My Happy Mind/PSHE & Relationships looks at feeling good and setting personal goals. We also talk about money and how money can affect how we feel and the key ideas of earning and saving.
