Valuing Every Achievement

YEAR ONE: AUTUMN TERM

STEP INTO KEY STAGE ONE: YEAR 1 IN AUTUMN

OUR CORE INTENTION IN ACTION

Take a look at the page below, including our curriculum project posters and mats, and download copies at the base of the page.

The children love their Autumn Term chronology focus in History. Toy Story is a fabulous way into big concepts in this subject as it is based upon the children's life experiences, very practical and easier for the children to build that sense of past and present. We also have a Teddy Bears Picnic and have many opportunities to share great toys from the past and present which is always great! A superb opener to Year 1!

We have looked at the work of Vincent Van Gogh during our drawing studies in Art & Design. We then, inspired by Toy Story, created our own observational drawings of teddy bears. Music is our singing focus during Autumn Term: collective singing, calling and responding whilst considering the same pitch with songs such as You've Got A Friend In Me. The children are introduced to textiles during their Design & Technology project. Inspired by their historical studies, the children will design and make their own hand puppets. Meanwhile in Physical Education, we focus upon the children's motor competence skills whilst introducing specific hit, catch and run skills linked to cricket. We complete term the by looking at a short dance project called Seasons.

During our daily English work, we have been writing information pieces about giraffes. The most popular pieces of work were when we created stories based upon Kipper's Toy Box by Mick Inkpen and Stick Man by Julia Donaldson.  Working with addition, subtraction and place value are naturally the main focus of Mathematics during the term with further work on 2-D shapes following this.

The Geography project asks: What does our world look like? Giving the children chance to take a look at continents and oceans and how our world is put together and what it means to look at a globe and begin to understand what it means. We look at harvest time, why Jewish people really value this time of year and what we can do to help others if the harvest is poor and also ask why many people give and receive gifts as our Religious Education big questions this term.

We continue our look at seasonal change from Early Years in our Science work. Then we introduce everyday materials and their properties before comparing and grouping them. We work upon controlling cars and bee-bots during our Computing first programming project this term. We also take a close look at mouse skills as a starting point to their control work. The children's E-Safety work centres upon what the internet is and what we mean by a website as an introduction to the work to follow. My Happy Mind/PSHE & Relationships looks at what is special about us and what emotions are and how we might see them in ourselves and others.
