Welcome to Year 1! The next stage in the journey as we join Key Stage One. Making that careful transition from everything that Early Years has to offer and moving this into a new stage of learning. Fortunately our philosophy is clear so that physical movement into a new layout and new challenges is a little easier. Our horseshoe layout, our learning stations and our short, sharp input of recurring skills and knowledge allow our children to move as easily as possible into new areas. In our 'I Dream of Being' curriculum, we have many favourite projects that we like to undertake. Let's headline a few of those below.
Our main stimulus for our English has been the texts that we have shared during the year to form the basis for our writing. Often using their structures and ideas, before adapting them to form our own re-tellings. We have used Kipper's Toy Box by Mick Inkpen, Stickman by Julia Donaldson and Lost & Found by Oliver Jeffers to help us do this. We have also used The Moon Landing and Giraffes as motivation for our non-fiction work during the year. Like all year groups, we combine our English work between writing focused units (with 'Writer's Craft' grammatical skills embedded within these) alongside a clear writer's process. This runs alongside a parallel focus upon reading via our range of classroom sessions each day, and across the week, using our class texts and our Reading Gang comprehension characters. We have really focused upon adding some spark and challenge to our reading work across school with some new initiatives and new methods. Underpinning each of these are our constant speaking and listening activities embedded within our writing and reading activities but forming a constant thread across the curriculum via our 'Let's Talk' initiative across the curriculum.
Mathematics has a heavy emphasis upon number and place value this year. Counting in multiples of 2, 5 and 10. Numbers to 20 and solving one step multiplication and division problems being initial goals for our children. Recognising the value of different coins and notes, identifying 2-D and 3-D shapes, measuring and comparing simple quantities and amounts and considering halves and quarters provide other key areas of knowledge that we aim for during the year.
We continue our Seasonal Change work from Early Years in Science. Whilst also undertaking projects in the following areas: An Introduction to Everyday Materials; Identifying & Naming Plants; Identifying, Naming & Describing Basic Part of the Human Body. We will be fair testing, asking questiongs, measuring and drawing conclusions during our practical science work during the year - keeping a strong eye upon the skills of being a young scientist as well as the knowledge aspect.
We simply love our first History project! Its a huge favourite of everyone and a great way to gain a sense of chronological awareness. Toy Story allows us to study change over time through popular children's toys of the 20th and 21st Centuries. The Teddy Bears Picnic and special theme days really help to bring this first history study to life. These are quickly followed by the next stage in our local history learning: St Annes in Bloom which picks up from the Early Years introduction and looks at the birth of our town including important people and buildings. We then round off the year with Explorers, which is our first of two Travels & Tales projects in Key Stage One. This one focuses upon the likes of Neil Armstrong and Christopher Columbus.
Our Geography studies contain three big questions for the children in Year 1: What does our world look like? Focusing upon the continents and oceans; What is special about the United Kingdom? An initial study of our country; What do I know about my town? Focusing upon our St Annes locality. during the year. Our Religious Education learning focus heavily upon harvest time and the significance of giving gifts during Autumn Term. Then moving onto Baptism, Easter and how different faiths believe God created the world before finishing by looking at Jesus' place of birth.
Teddy Bears, floral mobiles and the colour wheel are the focus of Art & Design in Year 1. Studying the work of Vincent Van Gogh, Alexander Calder, Henri Matisse and David Hockney amongst others. Design & Technology visits Structures, Moveable Mechanics and Textiles this year in 'Hand Puppets', 'Mini Greenhouses' and 'Lunar Rover'. Music follows our format of Singing, Performing and Composing with a constant Listening and Appraising focus with a careful choice of songs to perform and listen to using the Model Music Curriculum: Appendices all taking place in our dedicated music space: The ABC Theatre. Our lead sports: Netball, Football and Cricket are introduced in Physical Education work - through the core and fundamental skills linked to these. Alongside our summer Track and Field work and our Dance and Gymnastics curriculum.
Our Year 1 Computing work introduces some new areas and builds upon some initial exploration in others. There are three projects during the year for our children to undertake: First Programming with control cars and Bee Bots; Using digital images linked to St Annes in Bloom; 'Introducing Data' looking at we can record information using simple technology. Our Computer Systems & Networks focus and our E-Safety work goes on throughout the year with specific units and studies (mouse skills/online & internet safety). My Happy Mind/PSHE & Relationships looks at a whole range of themes in Year 1 ranging from beginning to understand our own brain works, understanding relationships and talking about responsibilities.
