All about increasing independence and readiness for next steps in this final year at Mayfield. We want to mix fun, responsibility and leadership potential with lots more lively and knowledge packed learning. As ever, there is a major focus upon recapping, consolidating and revisiting key knowledge and strategies amidst lots of new chunks of learning. Year 6 brings together everything we have learned during our 'I Dream of Being' studies across school. Extending and applying the knowledge and skills gained on the seven year journey.
We have core texts and subject themes as a central stimulus for our English units this year. Seeing us range from Letters From The Lighthouse by Emma Carroll and Shakespeare's Macbeth to diary entries inspired by our local history studies in Bring Me Sunshine during the Summer Term. Like all year groups, we combine our English work between writing focused units (with 'Writer's Craft' grammatical skills embedded within these) alongside a clear writer's process. This runs alongside a parallel focus upon reading via our range of classroom sessions each day, and across the week, using our class texts and our Reading Gang comprehension characters. We have really focused upon adding some spark and challenge to our reading work across school with some new initiatives and new methods. Underpinning each of these are our constant speaking and listening activities embedded within our writing and reading activities but forming a constant thread across the curriculum via our 'Let's Talk' initiative across the curriculum.
Mathematics continues to cover number, shape, space, measures and data handling it is just a question of carefully adding to, and applying, that knowledge from previous years. Keeping it fresh and building the challenge. Visiting a wide range of problem solving questions and situations to deepen and stretch understanding is a particular aim of Year 6 mathematics.
Our Science work this year focuses upon the following projects: 'Evolution & Inheritance'; Detailed Classification; Circulatory Systems; Light (Part 2); Eletricity (Part 2). Under the banner of The STEM Agency our big question enquiry team delve deep into these subject areas.
We move chronologically into modern History with studies upon World War Two in We All Stand Together, 1939-1945 from a local perspective in The Fylde Coast At War and lastly a study of light entertainment's impact, growth and influence in Blackpool during our affectionate project titled Bring Me Sunshine. These are some of our favourite history projects. Earth's Resources, Restless Earth and Morecambe Bay are our Geography studies during the year. Ranging from the sustainability of Earth's natural resources to the fragility of mankind within a powerful natural world culminating in a great hands on study of a nearby coastal environment and its changes over time make this a really exciting year in this subject. Our Religious Education studies have been similarly wide ranging considering themes relating to pilgrimage, faith's effect on people's lives, the meaning of 'exodus' and its signifance, religious journeys and how people of faith prepare for Christmas celebrations.
Whilst Pop Art, sculpture and Still Life are the focus of Art & Design in Year 6. Studying the work of Andy Warhol, Leonardo Da Vinci and Antony Gormley amongst others. Design & Technology visits Food & Diet, Moveable Mechanics and Structures one final time in 'Live Well For Less', 'Wellington Bombers' and 'Theatre Facades'. in our final Food & Diet project. Music follows our format of Singing, Performing and Composing with a constant Listening and Appraising focus with a careful choice of songs to perform and listen to using the Model Music Curriculum: Appendices all taking place in our dedicated music space: The ABC Theatre. Our lead sports: Netball, Football and Cricket continue to lead projects in Physical Education work alongside our Gymnastics, Outdoor Adventurous Activities and our summer Track and Field work.
In French,we study and learn new vocabulary related to the themes of ’La Seconde Guerre Mondiale’ (WW2), 'Les Jeux Olympiques' (The Olympic Games) & 'Moi Dans Le Monde (Me In The World). Our Year 6 Computing work is planned as a Skills Showcase throughout the year as we apply our skills to three specific projects: 'The Good Tank Guide' (Creating Media), 'Restless Earth' (Data & Information) & 'Final Control' (Programming). Our Computer Systems & Networks focus and our E-Safety work continues each term across the year with specific units and studies. My Happy Mind/PSHE & Relationships focuses upon, amongst many aspects, how mental health is something we all share, keeping a healthy mind and looking further into rights and responsibilities as young citizens.
